Although there are many diseases that can cause distant and near vision impairment in our eye patients, the main ones are myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, which we call refractive errors. Myopia is commonly understood by the public as difficulty seeing distant objects, while hypermetropia is known as difficulty seeing near objects. For myopia, this is generally correct; however, hypermetropia may not significantly affect distant and near vision during childhood and youth due to the eye’s adaptability, but as aging progresses, it can impair both distant and near vision. Astigmatism may cause visual impairment in both distance and near vision depending on its severity. Presbyopia is a physiological near vision impairment that typically emerges after the age of 40 due to aging and a decrease in the eye’s adaptability. If you experience such complaints, you should consult an eye doctor. If there are no other underlying causes for visual impairment, refractive errors are mostly corrected with glasses; alternatives like contact lenses, special intraocular lenses, surgery, and laser interventions are also available.

For patients with only refractive errors in distant-near vision who prefer using glasses, two separate pairs of glasses can be used. However, our primary recommendation is the modern solution of progressive glasses. If adjusted to, progressive glasses offer more comfort in daily life than the traditional option. Nevertheless, issues like insufficient clarity at intermediate distances when looking straight ahead may occur with progressive eye glasses. Therefore, in cases of intensive computer, not all but some sewing machine use, market label reading or other intermediate distance clarity needs such as dining table, a second progressive pair (office glasses) designed to clearly show arm-length distances when looking straight might be required. Based on simple solutions we personally experienced for these problems with both plain lenses and progressive lenses, we have opened this matter for professional discussion below. Under current economic conditions, not only patients but even optician institutions complain about the prices of glasses.
